Password Self Service

ITS are pleased to announce that the Password Self Service facility is now available.

What is Password Self Service?
Password self service is an online facility for students and staff to change their St Andrews password (for email, computer, SSO etc.)

The new self-service facility removes the need to contact IT Services if you forget your password.  This service can be used to reset your password from anywhere, at any time.

This service is available to all students and staff of the University of St Andrews.

In order to use this service, you must register. When you reset your password, a security token will be sent to your mobile phone (and email, if you choose this option).  Simply key in the security token and your password will be changed.

How do I register to be able to reset my own password?
To register, from the University’s home page in the search box, type password or passwords.  This should find the ‘change your password’ page. You’ll find the links for registration on this page.

Similar to the set up for online banking. For security reasons during the registration process you will be required to:
a)  Set a PIN
b)  Provide your mobile number (mandatory) – as a security token will be sent to this number should you ever need to change your password.
c)  Provide a non-university email address (optional)  – we can also send a security token to the email address you have provided.

Reactivating ChemDraw

Those who are currently using versions 10 to 15 should need only “reactivate”. To reactivate, click “Activate ChemDraw…” on the “Help” menu then select “Active over internet”.

If you need your serial number and misplaced it, you can look it up by logging in on http://www.cambridgesoft.com/login/ and clicking “View Serial Numbers & Expiration Dates for Your Downloads” “My Downloads”.
To download v15, go to here and follow the instructions to download.

If your current serial number will not activate, go to the website here. When you reach the download page, you should receive an email within a few minutes with a serial number that should work.

North Haugh & Sports Centre – Power Outage – 9am 30th July

Please be aware that power will be off from 9am on the 30 July 2015 to all buildings on the North Haugh (bar the Technology Centre and Gateway which will be unaffected). This will be off for a maximum of 15 minutes to allow Scottish Power to carry out essential safety checks to their equipment.

You are advised to shut down equipment completely at the mains prior to the power outage (9am 30th July). This is both to prevent damage to your equipment being caused by possible surges as power is restored AND the load presented by your kit CAUSING the surges.
It is NOT sufficient to just shut down the likes of computers and many other electronics, these maintain power to the equipment even when shut down and must be powered off at the mains.

Also, be aware that some systems (Networking, Servers and Storage) may need time to be brought back online after this power off.

Partial Power Shutdown 14th July

The power shutdown on Tuesday 14th July will require the power down of all devices in Node 2 (218) which include, but may not limited to:

  • NAS storage servers (Buffalo and Netgear), so most CHSRV-??? storage will be down.
  • Main chemistry server (chemistry.st-andrews.ac.uk) – affecting network shares for the Office, Stores, and any group, staff and web file storage etc. Also some pages for the school on the University website will be unavailable.
  • Network connections in many parts of Purdie will be down. The server and NAS storage will need to be shut down in advance of the power shut down. I am planning to schedule this for 5 pm on Monday 13th. They will not be available again until power is fully restored, estimated for 9am the next day.

Please ensure you save any work that may be affected this loss of storage before this time. Also do not run any instruments that would require to write directly to these storage devices during the down period.

Network connections, internet and other university systems will remain available till the power off on Tuesday morning.

365 Email Migration FAQs

I have had a few Frequently Ask Questions regarding the email Migration.

  • Do I need to download / install any new software?
    • If you are using a recent Microsoft Outlook (2010 onward) as a client you should not need any new software.
  • Will I need to make any changes to Outlook set-up?
    • You may be prompted in Outlook to accept changes from autodiscover.st-andrews.ac.uk or to restart Outlook. Please accept these changes. Hopefully most users will not need to make any manual changes.
  • Will My Outlook or mail folders look any different?
    • They should look the same.
  • Does this affect Saintmail (Gmail) users?
    • No.
  • Does this change or give me a new email address?
    • Also no. You keep your current address(es).
  • Will Unimail – webmail change?

Email to Office 365 Migration

The proposed date for the migration of chemistry mailboxes is week commencing 6th July.

The following information has been provided by IT Services:

 

In the coming weeks IT Services will be upgrading your email to a new system hosted by Microsoft. The service is called Office 365 and offers email, cloud storage and office web apps. In addition, staff and students are granted 5 copies of the latest Microsoft Office suite to install on smartphones, tablets and personally owned computers. Why are we doing this?

The contract with our existing email provider expires in the end of October. Microsoft Office 365 offers advanced email features and lots of benefits all free for education.

 

What does this mean for me?

You will get an email service provided by Microsoft, a highly secure and dependable email service. Unlimited online file storage is provided with OneDrive, an alternative to Dropbox, where you can upload, create and share files to collaborate with others in or outside the University.

 

What do I need to do?

Before we move all your email to the new system you need to do some housekeeping, Microsoft will not allow large emails to be transferred. Large email attachments (greater then 25MB) in your mailbox and any shared mailboxes will need to be saved to your home drive or shared drive then deleted from your mailbox. See the pre-migration tasks here; http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/itsupport/accounts/o365/migrationtasks/. Please do this before 5pm the day before the upgrade. You risk losing these emails if you do not save them to your computer.

Backend Email Changes + Extras

ITS will be migrating the Universities email storage from Brightsolid’s Exchange hosting to Microsoft’s own Office 365 platform. For anyone using the Outlook client this hopefully should be a seamless transition.
The planned date for Chemistry to move is Friday 26th June.

There is additional benefits to moving to Office 365:

  • Use of the online version of Office – Handy for editing documents when you don’t have access to a fully copy of Office
  • 5 copies of full Office to install pretty much wherever you want
  • Lync – Desktop instant messaging, video conferencing and sharing client
  • OneDrive – Unlimited Cloud storage
